Weekly Project: Topiary Trees

Posted on August 18, 2012 by mtwitchell in Projects: Arts & Crafts

Step 1

Find a pot and a Styrofoam that compliment each other in size. You will also need a small portion of Spanish Moss, and Floral Foam, as well as a glue gun and a few glue sticks.

Step 2

Take a chunk of Floral Foam and press it onto the top rim of the pot to make an impression in the foam. This is a good way to know exactly how big to cut your wedge of Floral Foam. Be sure to cut it tapered, so that it will push into the pot easily. Press the foam into the pot, so that no foam is sticking out over the top edge.

Step 3

Glue around outside edge of Floral Foam ONLY (if glue is put in the middle of the foam, your stick will not push down into the foam easily). Gently press on Spanish Moss, being careful not to burn your fingers. Trim Spanish Moss if needed, allowing some to hang over the edge of the pot.

Step 4

Push the cinnamon stick or twig into the center of the foam, pushing the Spanish Moss aside, to allow the stick to easily push into the foam. Push styrofoam ball onto the top of the stick, making sure everything is centered and standing straight. Remove the styrofoam ball while applying rosebuds, or rosehips. You can paint the styrofoam ball to better match the naturals that will be applied (if there is any space between buds or hips the white of the ball may show through if you do not do this).

Step 5

Choose a natural dried flower, rosehip, or silk flower if that is your preference, and begin gluing onto the ball, as closely together as possible, with hot glue. Be sure to avoid gluing anything over the hole you made when you pressed the ball onto the stick. Push the ball back onto the stick, and tie a piece of homespun or raffia around the stick to finish this project off.
